In New York City, 17-year-old Sam (Kollias) spends time with Jessie (Somaya Bohbal) in her bedroom as she prepares for a hiking trip. The film establishes their level of intimacy when Sam changes her tampon in the bathroom while they talk. Meanwhile, her father Chris (James Le Gros) argues with Sam’s stepmother while their young son runs around their duplex apartment. Chris, an experienced mountain climber who has taken Sam with him since she was a baby, has a very specific order for his supplies.
Chris's friend Matt (Danny McCarthy) and Matt's teenage son were supposed to accompany him on the trip, but when they arrive at his house, they see Matt arguing on the stairs with his son. Matt throws his bag into the car in a rage. He's going on the trip alone. This upsets Sam, who thought someone her age would be coming. Worse, the recently divorced Matt bitterly complains about his life and how everything he's worked so hard for is falling apart. Chris listens to his complaints, and Sam begins to feel even more neglected when Chris and Matt make her sleep on the hotel floor before the long drive begins.

He’s completely unprepared for such a difficult journey. Chris wants to empathize with Matt, but he also doesn’t want him to be left behind and struggling. The film is told primarily from Sam’s perspective, an observer. Donaldson uses her as a quiet, initially calming ringing box for the older men. You’re led to believe that something explosive is brewing as the group makes their way through the woods. Nothing really happens, and that could be a huge letdown for some viewers.
good one This film is an exercise in subtlety and ingenuity. The plot stumbles along. Donaldson uses realism in her portrayal of her characters. They are regular people who take a weekend off and discuss issues all the time. The conflict that ensues—and I must use that term lightly—is like a feather in the wind. But it leads to a change in Sam that encompasses every issue she has with her father. People see Sam but don’t really hear her. Chris loves and protects her unconditionally, but he hasn’t taken the time or effort to understand his daughter.
