Nashville's new guitar heroine and her band, Hodge Podge, perform “Tell Me Why U Do That.”
Sure, make one. Making your debut on late night TV is great, but you really know you've made it when you hear your name announced in Jeff Goldblum's sweet tones.
Nashville's new guitar heroine, 18-year-old Grace Powers, performed with her band, Hodge Podge, at Jimmy Kimmel Live! On Monday night, she performed a slick version of her hit “Tell Me Why U Do That.” It was a fun, refreshing performance — the song appears on Bowers and the Hodge Podge's new album Wine on Venus – which helps explain why there's so much buzz around Nashville about the Californian musician.
Playing her Gibson SG guitar, which she carries on her shoulder with a strap labeled “Voice,” Powers is a tough-guy figure, and the cool, calm complement to Hodge Podge’s flamboyant vocalist Esther Okay-Tetteh.
Powers and the band released their first album, Wine on VenusProduced by Brothers Osborne guitarist John Osborne last week, she will compete for Female Performer of the Year at the 2024 Americana Music Association Honors & Awards next month in Nashville.
Since first bursting onto the scene last year, Powers has seen her star rise through a variety of stage appearances: She played at the 2023 Newport Folk Festival, co-headlined with Lenny Wilson at Nashville’s New Year’s Eve Gala in December, and headlined her own gun violence benefit concert at Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl this summer. On Tuesday night, she’ll perform an album launch at Desert 5 Spot in Los Angeles and open for Gary Clark Jr. and Red Clay Strays in September.
Now I've heard Goldblum — a guest on Kimmel's show during the comedian's summer vacation — deliver it in his own distinctive way.
