Most amazing The news coming out of Comic-Con so far is that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is bringing back Robert Downey Jr. to play Doctor Doom in two upcoming films. The Avengers films.
The decision to recast the actor, one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's biggest stars, as one of its greatest villains was met with applause, backlash and even confusion, including from Downey Jr. Iron Man Co-star Gwyneth Paltrow.
In Downey Jr.'s Instagram post announcing his intention to play Doctor Doom, Paltrow — who is notoriously ignorant of the intricacies of the MCU, and has sometimes forgotten which Marvel movies she's appeared in — jumped into the comments to admit, “I don't get it, are you evil now?” (via diverse.)
It's currently unclear what Marvel's plans are for Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, whether he'll be an evil version of Tony Stark's iconic multiverse character or whether he'll be playing Victor Von Doom, who looks a lot like the man in the Iron Man suit; many comic book series allow for either possibility.
Currently, Downey Jr.'s Doom is set to make his debut in the recently announced film. Avengers: Judgment Day – which replaces the cancelled one Avengers: Kang Dynasty – To be released on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars On May 7, 2027. Both films will be directed by the Russo brothers, who will also return to the MCU after their recent directorial debut. Avengers: Infinity War And Avengers: Endgame.
