Halsey ‘Regrets’ Return to Music Following Fan Criticism of ‘Lucky’

After releasing her new single and music video for “Lucky” last week, Halsey said she “regrets”[s] “Back” after some fans criticized her return to music.

In a post on her Tumblr page tiredandlonelymuse, the singer stated that she was unhappy with fans who “keep on interjecting every now and then with their opinion about how much they hate me or how awful I am.”

“My fans are crueler to me than anyone else on the planet,” she wrote. “I don’t speak for all of you, of course. But in the past it was only a minority who were mean to me, and now it seems like the majority are just there to occasionally chime in with their opinion about how much they hate me or how awful I am. It’s hard to want to engage in a space that is completely devoid of any kindness, compassion, patience; or frankly, human decency. Especially after years of hiding from interactions for fear of this exact thing happening. I don’t know, man. I’m almost losing my life. I won’t do anything that doesn’t make me happy anymore. I can’t handle it spiritually.”

While it's unclear what criticism she's addressing, Halsey said that after being diagnosed with lupus and a rare disorder called T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder in 2022, she was excited to get back into music. But the response she's received so far for “Lucky” has left her regretting her decision.

“When I got sick,” she continued, “all I could think about was getting better so I could come back and be a part of this again, but I don’t even know what this It's not like that anymore and I want to crawl into a hole and regret it when I get back.

“Lucky” is the first single from her upcoming fifth studio album, which has yet to be released. The song is inspired by Britney Spears' 2000 song of the same name, which Halsey claims Spears approved herself. For the video, she drew inspiration from Spears' imagery and the concept that fame isn't always what it seems.

Shortly after posting the video, Spears claimed on her X (formerly Twitter) account that the image demeaned her and made her look like a “superficial pop star.” She quickly deleted the post and tweeted instead: “FAKE NEWS!!! It wasn't me on my phone!!! I love Halsey that's why I deleted it!!!”

Halsey responded by retweeting Spears' tweet, writing: “And I love Britney!!!! Always have and always will 💕 You were the first person to make me realize what it means to be inspired. You continue to inspire me every day.”
