Singer Halsey has released a new song titled “Ego.” The guitar-driven track takes inspiration from the ’90s, features an upbeat riff and a driving chorus that pays homage to bands like Garbage and No Doubt. The singer urged fans to “listen closely” to the track.
“I guess I should try to kill my ego,” Halsey screams on the song. “‘Cause if I don’t, my ego might kill me/ I’m all grown up but somehow lately/ I’ve been acting like a little kid/ I’m not really as happy as I look.”
“Ego” is the latest single from Halsey's upcoming album, The great imitatorThe singer released the song on October 25. The singer introduced the song during a live performance at KOKO in London in August, telling the crowd: “I've been teasing a new song for the past couple of days. You're the first people in the world to hear it. Even before some of the people who work at the label.”
Halsey announced the album's release date and shared its cover art earlier this week. “I made this album in the space between life and death. And it feels like I've waited forever for it. I'm going to wait a little longer. I've already waited a decade,” she wrote on social media.
She also launched a fan search to reveal five different covers for the album. On August 27, Halsey released a trailer for her “Confessional Concept” album, a roughly 90-second clip that explores how her music might have been perceived if she had debuted in the 2000s, 1990s, 1980s, or 1970s. “I really thought this might be the last album I ever put out. When you get sick like that, you start thinking about ways things could have been different,” she says at the beginning of the video. “What if all of this hadn’t happened? Ashley, 18, became Halsey in 2014.”
Halsey, who released her latest album If I can't have love, I want power. Three years ago, Halsey returned with “The End,” a song about her health struggles with systemic lupus erythematosus and a rare lymphoproliferative disorder. The haunting song also served as an ode to her fans. In July, Halsey released “Lucky,” a pop song that combined Britney Spears’s song of the same name with Monica’s “Angel of Mine,” followed by “Lonely Is the Muse” in August, a dark pop song about how past lovers have played a role in her self-esteem.
