Kit Connor, the 20-year-old star of Netflix's hit series “Heartstopper,” has revealed that filming intimate scenes for the upcoming third season was an intense process.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Connor said that his closeness to his co-star Joe Locke made the process easier and that they had worked with the same intimacy coordinator since season one.
“We started taking baby steps. In the first season, he made sure we were comfortable holding hands. Now we’re doing sex scenes,” Connor told The Sunday Times. “We did a lot of them. Not a lot of them ended up in the series. But we did about seven hours of sex scenes.”
The actor, who plays Nick Nelson in the coming-of-age drama, explained that the show has matured along with its cast. “I can't say we've outgrown the show because the show is growing in its own right,” Connor said.
Elsewhere in the interview, Connor discussed his Broadway debut as Romeo opposite Rachel Zegler's Juliet, saying he's focused on the performance rather than potential celebrity encounters.
The actor also spoke about the challenges of fame, including being recognised in public. “Whenever I get stopped or I realise I’m being watched, I feel a bit naked,” Connor told The Sunday Times. He and Luke have begun to adjust to their newfound celebrity status, admitting that some activities, such as “walking down Oxford Street on a Saturday morning”, are now off-limits because of the attention they attract.
Conor spoke about his experience coming out in 2023 after facing pressure on social media. He said: “I don't think about it too much, I have to say, and that makes me happy. I've talked about it endlessly. I think I've said everything there is to say about it. I've moved on and I feel a lot better.”
Speaking about social issues, Connor expressed his views on toxic masculinity, describing the concept as “completely foreign” to him. He mentioned controversial character Andrew Tate, stating that people like him “are not worth wasting your time on.” Connor highlighted how “Heartstopper” offers an alternative perspective for younger viewers, noting that “most of the characters — the lesbian, gay, trans, asexual — are pretty nice, you know?”
Heartstopper Season 3 will premiere on Netflix on October 3.
