Do you prefer a “premium” theater experience like IMAX, 3D, or Dolby?
Premium cinema experiences, like IMAX, Dolby, and, for some films, 3D, seem to be more popular than ever. Personally, I’ll go to an IMAX screening whenever I get the chance, especially with AMC’s perks and A-List subscriptions. I tend to avoid 3D unless the film is truly designed for the experience, like the Avatar series, but most of the time, it feels like a lazy afterthought. I’m lucky enough to live near a 70mm IMAX screen, where films like Dune 2, Oppenheimer, and the upcoming Joker really shine. What do you think of the premium experience? Is it expensive? Do you not care for the bigger screens or improved sound? Or do you avoid the theater altogether and wait for the inevitable streaming release a month after the film premieres?

Some streaming services have variable aspect ratios that help maintain the same feeling you get when watching a movie in IMAX, although the sound quality is nowhere near as good as a movie theater. Disney+ has plenty of R-rated movies IMAX has been improved which will automatically change the aspect ratio to what it was in theaters. It allows viewers to see more of the movie at certain points. It may be annoying to watch on a smaller screen, but it's a nice bonus that helps give the home viewing experience a more theatrical feel.
Interestingly, some streaming services have an advantage over their physical media counterparts when it comes to aspect ratios. For example, most physical MCU releases do not feature the variable aspect ratio, with Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Being an anomaly, people should stick with Disney+ if it has real value to them. In another franchise, there is a notable exception: The Hunger Games: Ignitionwhose Blu-ray release changes the ratio when Katniss first enters the eponymous death match. Ultimately, this isn't a big deal, but it's an added bonus that some streaming services offer, thanks to some movies being shot in IMAX.
