As the eight-episode series unfolds, a high school metal band decides to capitalize on the paranormal activity by building a reputation as a satanic band — that is, until murders, kidnappings, and paranormal activity lead to a witch hunt.

A Satanic panic, based on unfounded conspiracy theories, spread across the country in the 1980s. Parents searched for secret tunnels under elementary schools, toothpaste and soap companies had to fend off accusations of working with the devil, and cults were mistakenly believed to be mass child abusers. hysteria! Writers and executive producers Matthew Scott Keen and David A. Goodman used this phenomenon as inspiration for their series.

“The children of the atomic age continued to terrorize their families by turning on the TV and then turning it off in the 1960s,” the press release adds. “These same ‘free spirits’ continued to vote for Reagan and called for censorship of the ‘lewd’ and ‘satanic’ heavy metal bands their children worshiped. Now those children are adults attacking consciences, TikTok, and a Barbie movie. The cycle never ends. And it’s hard to escape the feeling that someone, or something, is sitting there watching all this and laughing.”

The film explores both sides of this generational fear. “The thrill of being a young man, rebellious at heart and ambitious at heart — and the horrors of growing up and realizing that the world you thought you knew has changed beneath your feet,” the producers said in a joint statement.
