Released in 2005, the series created by Eric Kripke focused on the adventures of brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, raised by an absent father who dedicated himself to hunting supernatural creatures after a demon murdered his wife. When John, the boys’ father, mysteriously disappears, Dean looks for Sam to help search for him as they lead the family business themselves. That is, hunting ghosts, vampires, monsters, demons and all kinds of powerful creatures. The series ran for 15 seasons, generating a huge and very loyal fan base that’s still present to this day, and wants to enjoy more stories within the same universe.
Speaking with Collider to promote the new season of Walker, another hit CW series, Padalecki addressed the possibility of a revival and revealed the reasons why it hasn’t happened yet:
“Jensen and I feel so strongly about our show that we had for 15 years together that we don’t wanna just do it, just to do it. We don’t wanna go, ‘Hey, I have two weeks off in June. Let’s go ahead and shoot 10 pages a day, just so we can have some more content.’ If and when Supernatural comes back, it’s going to be a labor of love, and we’re gonna put every hour in to make sure that it’s as true to the canon and to the fandom and to the story and to the characters as possible. So, my short answer is it’s not a consideration, the answer is yes . I just don’t know when I’m available. I don’t know when he’s available. But again, my answer is yes.”
After the series ended, Ackles tried to continue Supernatural‘s legacy in The Winchesters, a prequel series centered on young versions of Sam and Dean’s parents. Unfortunately, the show was canceled after just one season, joining the long list of Supernatural spin-offs that failed to be as significant as the original series.
Is a Supernatural Revival a Good Idea?
There are already many series that have had the opportunity to return to the screen, either with a new set of protagonists, such as How I Met Your Father or Bel-Air, or with their original cast, such as Dexter and ICarly. And while many have succeeded, just as many have failed, so it’s hard to guess what would happen with Supernatural.
However, it might be too soon to bring the Winchester brothers back for a new adventure, especially with Ackles and Padalecki staying busy with new projects such as The Boys and Walker, respectively. In a few more years, it will surely be much more effective to bring them together again, whether for a special episode, an extra season or a movie.
10 Actors Who Were on Supernatural Before They Became Famous
Supernatural featured many characters played by many actors during its 15-season run. Many of these actors are world-famous now.
But there are still many opportunities within the Supernatural universe to tell other stories, and while it is true that the many attempts at spin-offs have not worked out, it is possible that they will manage to find the right character or plot to continue exploring this same universe without being necessary for Sam and Dean to return.
Supernatural
can currently be streamed on Netflix.
