Musician Changes Lyrics to 'Brotherhood Is Crowning Goodness' in Support of Kamala Harris
Joan Baez posted a video on her Instagram account on Sunday of herself performing “America the Beautiful” and encouraging people to get out and vote in the 2024 presidential election.
Sitting in the kitchen, she opened the clip with a sweet laugh before singing the patriotic song while strumming her acoustic guitar. In her heartfelt rendition, she changed the original lyrics of “Brotherhood is crowned good” to “Brotherhood is crowned good” in support of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
“Times have changed – let’s crown good with brotherhood,” she captioned the clip. “Register to vote at Vote.org or Headcount.org and vote blue!”
The folk legend and activist made a surprise appearance during Hozier’s set at the Newport Folk Festival on Friday, joining him along with Mavis Staples, Nathaniel Rateliff, Madison Cunningham, Allison Russell and more for a rendition of The Band’s “The Weight.” As an added bonus, the set culminated with Baez leading the crowd through an acoustic rendition of “We Shall Overcome,” trading verses with Kaia Cutter and William Prince. Although Baez has performed at the festival on numerous occasions, she was officially there to read poetry.
Baez published her first book of poetry, When you see mom, ask her to dance. In April, this came after the release of a documentary about her life. Joan Baez I Am Noise Which premiered last fall, and which also follows her most recent tour that ended in 2019.
