Joe Wright’s Venice-Bound Mussolini Series Gets First Look

Sky and Fremantle have released the first trailer for M – Son of the Century, the highly anticipated series about Benito Mussolini’s rise to power which will be launched at the upcoming Venice Film Festival.

The multifaceted, eight-episode show is directed by Joe Wright, the British director of the Winston Churchill drama “Darkest Hour” — for which Gary Oldman won an Oscar for his portrayal of the British prime minister — and “Atonement,” among other titles.

The vibrant soundtrack to “M” was composed by Tom Rowlands, also known for being part of the pioneering British electronic music duo The Chemical Brothers.

“You can play with the aesthetics and the shape of the piece. The result will be this kind of techno music,” Wright said. diverse Last year, the show was filmed at Cinecittà Studios in Rome, where the entire show was shot. “The aesthetic is a mix between the raucous dance party culture of the 90s and the ‘man with a movie camera’.” [the 1929 seminal avant-garde doc by Dziga Vertov]”It's a great Ukrainian film. It's like 'The Man with the Movie Camera' and every gangster film I've ever seen.”

Luca Marinelli (The Eight Mountains, Martin Eden) plays Mussolini during the period between 1919, when he founded the Fascist Party in Italy, and 1925, when Mussolini gave an infamous speech in the Italian Chamber of Deputies after gaining power with the March on Rome in 1922, and declared himself dictator after the assassination of Socialist MP Giacomo Matteotti. The series will also provide viewers with insight into Mussolini and his personal relationships, including with his wife Rachele, his mistress Margherita Sarfatti and other notable figures from the time, according to the synopsis.

“M” is based on Antonio Scuratti’s Premio Strega-winning, international bestseller, which traces the birth of fascism in Italy and the rise of Mussolini in an innovative style. The screenplay was written by Stefano Bessis (“Gomorrah,” “The New Pope”) in collaboration with David Cerino (“1992”).

The artistic director of the Venice Film Festival, Alberto Barbera, recently stated: diverse Having a British director, rather than an Italian director, handle this material “is an advantage, because it makes it a little more objective of what happened during those years.”

All eight episodes of the series “M – Son of the Century” will have their world premiere in Venice.

M is produced by Sky Studios and Lorenzo Mieli for Fremantle's The Apartment Pictures in association with Pathé and in association with Small Forward. The series is set to launch in 2025 on Sky in its European territories (UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland) with Fremantle handling international sales.
