John Legend to Perform Prince Medley to Introduce Tim Walz at DNC

John Legend will pay tribute to Minnesota, the home state of vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, by performing a set of Prince songs Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention, the news was first reported by Rolling Stone and the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Any music surrounding Walz’s speech Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago was a source of great interest, given the Minnesota governor’s passion for music that the world has discovered. Some supporters even tweeted their wish list of classic rock or Minnesota-related acts they hope Walz will attend… but the Democrats are unlikely to meet again.

Legend has a history of covering Prince songs, having performed “Nothing Compares 2 U” as part of a Prince tribute at the Grammys in 2020.

Additionally, CNN exclusively reported Wednesday that Pink is scheduled to perform Thursday night before presidential candidate Kamala Harris takes the stage.

A handful of music stars performed on the first two nights of the convention, with Jason Isbell and Mickey Guyton performing Monday night and Patti LaBelle and Common on Tuesday. James Taylor was scheduled to make the headline appearance Monday, singing “You’ve Got a Friend” as an introduction to his friend Joe Biden’s speech, but his performance was cut short because the program was running more than an hour long.

Music also played a big role Tuesday night with DJ Cassidy playing a playlist of songs associated with different states as they joined in the traditional call, with a brief live appearance by Lil Jon highlighted between recorded segments.
