Jon Stewart’s Harris-Trump Debate Recap

Jon Stewart’s Harris-Trump Debate Recap

Jon Stewart appeared live on “The Daily Show” Tuesday night, where he shared his reaction to the presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

Stewart highlighted several moments from tonight's debate, including Trump and Harris' positions on abortion, as well as Trump's comments about immigrants eating pets.

During Stewart's opening, the show featured conflicting clips of Trump and Harris' answers to the abortion issue, including the former president saying “we got what everyone wanted” after Roe v. Wade was overturned.

“I’ve spoken to women from all over our country. Do you want to talk about this?” Harris replied. “Pregnant women who want to carry their pregnancies to term, who have miscarriages, who are denied emergency room care because health care providers are afraid they’ll go to jail — and she’s bleeding in a car in the parking lot? She didn’t want that.”

“Oh my God, I broke this,” Stewart said in response to Harris' comments on abortion rights.

“It's like one of those 'Groundhog Day' movies where you can go back and fix the bad way something happened earlier into the good way,” Stewart continued.

The Daily Show host later mocked Trump's false comments about immigrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio.

“They eat the dogs. The people who come here eat the cats. They eat the pets that people live with,” Trump said during the debate.

“Having spent some time in Springfield myself, I think I know what’s going on here,” Stewart said. “And I think Trump himself could become one of Springfield’s most famous residents.” The show then cut to a clip of Abe, better known as Grandpa Simpson, from “The Simpsons.”

More seriously, Stewart criticized Trump's response to the January 6 insurrection, with the former president repeatedly claiming that Nancy Pelosi was responsible because she “didn't do her job.”

“I had nothing to do with it, except that they asked me to give a speech. And I showed up to give a speech,” Trump said.

“You spent two months riling up your base that our country was literally stolen from them through fraudulent means, and you couldn’t even smell it in a court of law, and you allowed yourself to abuse them,” Stewart said in response. “You persisted. You abused their trust. Did you come to speak? You tweeted, ‘Join me on January 6th, it’s going to be crazy.’”

“One thing will always be true,” Stewart continued, “and it is a trait of the former president that I have no respect for: Whenever he is cornered and forced to face even the smallest consequences for his lies and schemes, he resorts to the greatest refuge of hypocrites.”

The broadcaster then shared a message to Trump supporters, saying: “This man, who constantly claims to be your hero, who says they will have to go through him to get to you, will always, when the boat sinks, be the first one to get into the lifeboats, because at that moment, he will always say the same thing: ‘I didn’t know anything about that.’”

“In any other country, this lack of accountability would lead to exclusion,” Stewart said.
