According to the actor Josh HartnettOscar winner Matt Damon He gives great advice. But his timing needs some work. While appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy FallonHartnett revealed that Bourne Identity The actor gave him a warning before they acted together in OppenheimerBut it was too late to do anything useful. Damon warned the then-44-year-old actor that he was too old to gain weight just for a movie role.Unfortunately, it was too late.“He told me not to gain the weight I had already gained for the role,” Hartnett told Fallon with a laugh.
Damon, now 53, has a firm rule about not gaining weight for a role now that he's over 40. Despite trying to warn Hartnett about gaining weight to play Ernest Lawrence in Christopher Nolan's film, the damage was already done. When Hartnett informed him of his weight gain, Damon didn't hesitate to respond:
I gained about 30 pounds for this role, and he said, 'You'll never gain that weight again, man.'
Damon played Lieutenant General Leslie Groves, who worked with Oppenheimer to oversee the Manhattan Project that built the atomic bomb. Hartnett, meanwhile, played Ernest Lawrence, the brilliant physicist who won the Nobel Prize in 1939 and was a colleague of Oppenheimer's at the University of California, Berkeley. Hartnett gained weight to resemble Lawrence's larger frame, a move Damon said he would come to regret. Hartnett went on to say that Damon was merciless and made fun of him for his unplanned weight gain.
“He said, ‘You’re going to spend the rest of your life trying to lose this weight, and you’re never going to be able to lose it because your body is going to want to gain it back. You’re going to keep growing back until you get to this size, and you’re going to try to lose it, but it’s going to come back to normal.’ I said, ‘Thank you, Matt. Thank you for telling me this now. I’ve already gained the weight.’”
Fortunately, his efforts to embody the character were certainly not in vain, as his performance in the film opposite Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, was excellent, and the film itself became a critical, cultural and box office phenomenon. Oppenheimer The film won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.
