The vice president received enough delegate votes to lead the Democratic ticket in November.
US Vice President Kamala Harris has received enough votes to be confirmed as the Democratic Party's nominee for president in 2024, according to the Democratic National Committee.
In a virtual vote held on Friday, Harris surpassed the 2,350 delegate threshold needed to win the nomination, which will be formally confirmed on Monday when voting closes.
“I am honored to be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. I will formally accept the nomination next week,” Harris wrote on Twitter shortly after her victory. “This campaign is about people coming together, driven by patriotism, to fight for the best of us.”
“I am very proud to confirm that Vice President Harris received more than a majority of the votes from all convention delegates and will be the nominee,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Jamie Harris said in a campaign phone call on Friday.
After President Joe Biden's surprise departure from the ticket in July, Democrats quickly rallied behind Harris as the party's presumptive nominee.
With the nomination now firmly in her bag, the Democratic National Convention, scheduled for later this month, will skip the formalities of delegate voting. The event will instead focus on introducing Harris—and her soon-to-be-announced vice presidential pick—to the American public, and laying bare the stakes of a second term for Donald Trump.
