Prime Video and All3Media International are set to launch an Indian version of the hit reality show 'The Traitors', with media personality Karan Johar set to host the show.
The unscripted series, based on the BAFTA and Emmy format created by IDTV and RTL Netherlands, will be produced by BBC Studios India Productions. The show will air exclusively on Prime Video in Hindi with English subtitles.
“Traitors” involves 20 contestants in a royal palace competing for a cash prize through physical and psychological challenges. Some players are secretly classified as “Traitors” who must eliminate “Innocents” without being discovered.
This format has been adapted in over 20 countries since it first appeared in the Netherlands in 2021. There are now around 30 versions of “Traitors” commissioned around the world.
“In our journey to deliver unscripted and highly compelling content, The Traitors marks a significant milestone for Prime Video. It is a unique reality format that has captivated a global audience across regions and languages. An exciting show like this requires an equally exciting host. We are thrilled to have Karan Johar hosting and leading the show. Who better to amplify the drama and entertainment than him,” said Nikhil Madhok, Head of Originals, Prime Video, India.
“Having watched both the UK and US versions, I am a huge fan of the format and am impressed by Claudia Winkleman and Alan Cumming, who have a wonderful way of hosting their own shows with a calm and engaging theatrical style that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Building on the very successful relationship with Prime Video, I am thrilled to be hosting the Indian version of the show. The 20 actors on the show will be an unforgettable and unpredictable journey, especially with me working in the shadows,” added Johar.
“The new concept and format of the show brings the signature thrill and excitement that has captured the attention of audiences across the world and will now reach an even larger audience through the Indian version,” said Sabrina Doggett, Executive Vice President, Asia Pacific, All3Media International. “The collaboration with Prime Video and BBC Studios India Productions demonstrates our shared vision to deliver unique and immersive factual content that not only entertains but also engages audiences. Together, we are confident that ‘The Traitors’ will create a whole new kind of fan base in India when it premieres on Prime Video.”
“The Traitors is the perfect game of trust and deception. It requires wit, intelligence, strategy, deception, some drama and a certain attitude to keep your nerves when thrown into unexpected situations and conflicts, making it a thoroughly enjoyable entertainment. Keeping the international format and scale, the Hindi version of the film will appeal to audiences of all ages with diverse choices and preferences and we can’t wait for them to enjoy this game,” added Sameer Jojit, Managing Director, BBC Studios India Productions.
The Hindi version of the film is currently under production, and the premiere date has not been announced yet.
The series “Traitors” (Dutch title: “De Verraders”) was created and developed by Mark Bos and IDTV Creative Director Jasper Hoogendoorn in collaboration with the RTL Creative Unit.
