Katy Perry has announced the release of her new single “Lifetimes,” which is set to be released on August 9th, along with the song's music video.
The singer announced the announcement by posting the song's cover art, which shows Perry holding a futuristic heart. Perry has been teasing the song for the past week or so, posting clips on social media using the house-inspired track as its soundtrack.
“Lifetimes” comes on the heels of the singer’s “Woman’s World,” the first single from her upcoming sixth studio album, “143.” The song marked a rocky start to Perry’s recent era, debuting at No. 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 65 on the Global 200. Fans were quick to cancel the song after learning of the involvement of Dr. Luke, Perry’s former collaborator who was accused of sexual misconduct by his former artist Kesha.
The music video for “Woman's World” didn't help at all, as it was intended to be a satirical portrayal of female empowerment, but was deemed a bit over-the-top. After the video's release, Perry explained, “We're having fun with it, we're making fun of it, it's very funny and very direct… It's a reset for me and my idea of feminine divinity.”
Although she has yet to reveal the tracklist for her upcoming album, “143” is set to drop on September 20. She has been teasing some of the songs and features during live streams on Instagram and TikTok, where she previewed “I’m His He’s Mine” featuring Doechii, “Gimme Gimme” featuring 21 Savage, and “Nirvana.”
It's been nearly four years since Perry released her last album, “Smile,” which came out in August 2020. The project spawned a handful of singles including “Daisies” and the title track, and became her weakest performing album in years, debuting at No. 5 on the Billboard 200.
