Kevin Feige Explains X-23’s Return in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Trailer

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is billed as a movie filled with short scenes that see the return of many mutants and other beloved characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While most of these appearances have been kept under wraps, Marvel did reveal one surprise in the final trailer for the third installment of the superhero franchise: the return of X-23, played by Dafne Keen from 2017's “Logan.”

According to Marvel president Kevin Feige, there were several reasons behind the studio's decision to spoil the X-23 surprise just a week before “Deadpool & Wolverine” hits theaters.

“Daphne really wanted to go to the premiere and we said, ‘Well, she can’t really come to the premiere because that would be a spoiler.’ We haven’t shown it yet,” Feige said. diverse At the “Deadpool & Wolverine” premiere Monday night in New York City.

Fortunately for Keen, Disney wanted to reveal the character in the trailer because X-23's appearance evokes “an emotional core to the movie,” Feige explained, adding that Disney's marketing knows “exactly when to push a little bit forward and when to pull back a little bit.”

Marvel eventually agreed to include X-23 because, as Feige said, “he looked great in the final trailer” and “it meant Dafne could come to the premiere.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” sees Hugh Jackman return as the animal mutant after his farewell in “Logan.” Ryan Reynolds, who dons the red “Must’s” suit for the third time, said he and Jackman wanted the film to deliver two things: joy and a full experience.

“The thing I’m most proud of is that every shot in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is so thoughtful in the sense that we spent so much time and so much detail, so much attention to detail in every moment… and it pays off,” Reynolds told reporters.

“I think we both had very high expectations for the movie, so yes there was a risk because we wanted the movie to exceed those expectations, and both of our characters mean a lot to us,” Jackman said. “Our friendship is one of the most important things in my life. So we wanted to be as great as possible, and thankfully, we exceeded everyone.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” opens in theaters Friday.
