1987 musical biography No Bamba Chronicles the life and career of Mexican-American rock pioneer Ritchie Valens. Now, according to diverseA remake of the film is currently underway.
Lou Diamond Phillips played Valens in the original film, which was nominated for a Golden Globe and Los Lobos won Best Album in 1987 for their version of Valens' 1958 single “La Bamba,” which was based on a Mexican folk song. Valens is also known for “Donna” and “Come on, Let's Go,” two radio hits in the late 1950s.
Valens died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959, at the age of 17. The crash, which took place in an Iowa cornfield, also claimed the lives of Buddy Holly and Gillis Perry Richardson, known as “The Big Bopper.” Don McLean would go on to mythologize the tragedy, known as “The Day the Music Died,” in his 1971 work American Pie.
according to diverseMucho Mas Media and Sony Pictures will develop a remake of Valens' life story. Luis Valdez, who wrote and directed the 1987 film, will serve as executive producer.

Yet Richard Valens’ tragically cut short life and career continues to inspire new generations of fans around the world,” Valdez said in a statement. “As new biographical details emerge, a fresh cinematic look at his 17 years on earth can only add to his enduring legend.”
