Lady Gaga Explains Why She Didn’t Refute Rumors Claiming She’s a Man


Lady Gaga has finally addressed the long-running rumors that she was born a man. During her appearance on Netflix What's Next? The Future with Bill GatesShe addressed the speculation directly, telling Gates she never felt the need to respond because she “didn't feel like a victim.”

“When I was in my early 20s, there was a rumor that I was a man,” Lady Gaga told Gates on the episode. “I traveled all over the world. I traveled on tours and promoting my records, and in almost every interview I would sit in — there were these photos online that were doctored — they would say, ‘There’s a rumor that you’re a man. What do you have to say about that?’”

“The reason I didn’t answer the question is because I didn’t feel like I was being victimized by that lie and I thought, ‘What about a child who is accused of that who thinks a public figure like me would be ashamed?’ I’ve been in situations where correcting a rumor wasn’t in the best interest of others’ well-being. In this case, I tried to be provocative and otherwise disruptive. I tried to use misinformation to create another point of discomfort.”

Gaga, who co-stars in the sequel with Joaquin Phoenix, Joker: Madness in Duo“I've been used to the lies being spread about me since I was 20 years old. I'm an artist. I think it's kind of funny,” she added.

In 2011, the singer dismissed a question about the rumors during an interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN, saying, “Why the hell would I waste my time and put out a press release about whether or not I have a penis? My fans don't care and I don't care either.”
