More than three Decades after his first appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards, Lenny Kravitz returned to the stage on Wednesday night. Backed by veteran guitarist Craig Ross, Quavo and a troupe of dancers who brought different generations of sexual realism to the stage, he performed “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” “Human” and a remix of his hit “Fly” with the Atlanta rapper. Released last month, the “Fly” remix was laced with trap drums and Quavo’s hip-hop verses onstage as the dancers went from the glitz of hair metal to the vibrancy of a rap video.
Kravitz won Best Rock Video this year for “Human,” a song from his 12th studio album. electric blue lightHis debut album, “Are You Gonna Go My Way”, was released at the 1993 Video Music Awards, and he won that year's Moon Person Award for Best Male Vocal Video for the accompanying track.
Kravitz last appeared at the awards show in 1998 when he played guitar for Madonna on “Ray of Light.” Although Kravitz did not play on the album version, he has a long history with Madonna, having co-written her hit “Justify My Lov” with the star and Ingrid Chavez.
Other performers set to perform at this year's VMAs include Megan Thee Stallion, LL Cool J, Sabrina Carpenter, Shawn Mendes and Chappelle Rowan. The most nominated artists are Taylor Swift and Post Malone. The ceremony will be held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
