Writer and director Osgood Perkins It has now been revealed that yes, The devil is actually hidden everywhere in the hit horror movie. leggyIn a recent interview with Vulture, The director even revealed where the devil was hiding even in specific scenes. The film stars Nicolas Cage as the eponymous serial killer, Long Legs, and Maika Monroe as FBI profiler Lee Harker. The film follows Lee as she investigates the patterns and motives of the eponymous serial killer, Dale Ferdinand. However, the more she uncovers, the more she learns about her own personal connections to the case.
Perkins has now shared all sorts of secrets and Easter eggs from the film, describing the demon’s presence as hidden. The editing and use of shadows invite the audience to look longer and more intently at the entire screen, and the more fans rewatch the film, the easier it is to spot something they hadn’t noticed before. Hidden figures can be seen in various scenes, and in addition to being part of the plot, Perkins reveals that there were also practical reasons for adding the demonic character, such as hiding the camera’s reflection in certain shots. See if you can spot the demon in the images below:
The devil is in the details
The first image above shows me in the early stages of her investigation. As she reviews the case materials, a shadowy figure appears in the upper left corner. The entity’s curved horns are easily spotted against the dark brown walls. Perkins explained:
“The closer we get to uncovering the truth, the more we realize how closely the devil is watching us. Frame after frame, you can see him lurking in the background.”
In the second image, the same demonic presence waits in the corner next to the back wall of Long Legs' basement lair. It is later revealed in the film how much influence the entity has over him.
In another image, the silhouette of the devil appears in an otherwise cozy library window. The devil follows Lee, watches her, and assists her in her investigations, all of which hint at a larger design and dark forces at play. The devil clearly wants to trap Lee, lure her into the world of Longlegs. As Perkins explains:
“By giving me the information I need to catch Long Legs, the demon is simply guiding us towards the next move in a larger combination.”
The third image above is one of the most difficult to spot. It shows a man, Longlegs, standing in a dark, misty forest. However, if you look closely, you will see that he is not alone. Hidden in the gray mist is the same demonic figure which, for Perkins, made sense because the demon is accompanying him “in a sort of ‘I will come too’ atmosphere.”
Finally, the devil can be seen looming over Lee as a child, with Perkins wishing to create a “paternal presence” for the evil entity.
“This was probably one of the first, if not the first, buildings we built to see what it would look like,” Perkins said. “It shows in the image of what’s happening in the movie and also gives the demon almost a paternal presence in her little room behind her.”
