Lucy Lawless Calls out Hercules Costar Kevin Sorbo for Racist Kamala Harris Remark

Lucy Lawless calling her ex boyfriend Hercules and Xena: Warrior Princess On August 8, actor Kevin Sorbo, a supporter of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, attacked the former president for questioning Kamala Harris’ heritage. At the recent National Association of Black Journalists convention, Trump asked whether the Democratic nominee, who was born in Oakland, California, to an Indian mother and Jamaican father, was Indian or black. On August 8, Sorbo went further in his comments to Trump, writing:

“If Kamala is really black, let them say the N-word to her, and let the people decide for themselves.”

Lawless, who often attacks former President Trump, joined thousands of social media users who were disgusted by Sorbo’s post. In two now-deleted posts, Lawless sarcastically defended Sorbo by sharing a story from the 1990s and referencing the death of Nicole Simpson Brown. Lawless said (via Yahoo Entertainment):

“In his defense, I personally witnessed a situation where Kevin Sorbo defended a black man against whites. @RonFilipkowski @JohnFugelsang

In the New Zealand summer of February 1995, my character, Xena, was introduced on my husband's show, The Legendary Journeys of Hercules. We actors were sitting together and I bought a news item. I said, “Guys, did you hear about that woman and her friend who were brutally murdered in Los Angeles? I think the football player might have done it!” And Peanut roared, “Hey! I knew Nicole and let me tell you… it was no picnic!”

We were all shocked. I said, “She didn’t deserve to be stabbed to death.” He replied, “I’m just saying she was just a piece of work.” That sentence stuck with me because these American expressions were so unusual to us. But we knew what he meant. #DontGetMeStarted!”

Lawless portrayed warrior Xena during the first season of the series, which Sorbo led. HerculesHer character quickly became a fan favorite, and the actress landed a spinoff, Xena: Warrior PrincessThe show premiered in 1995 and was a critical and commercial success, garnering high ratings and viewership figures. While Lawless and Sorbo’s professional relationship has led to television success, their off-screen dynamics are marked by radically different political stances. Her Simpson story isn’t the first time Lawless has targeted Sorbo either. In 2021, Sorbo shared a photo of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, saying the attackers were “left-wing agitators posing as Trump supporters…” and didn’t look like patriots. Lawless responded:

“No, Peanut. They’re not patriots. They’re your flying monkeys, your domestic terrorists, your conspiracy theorists. They’re the assholes who go out and do the evil bidding of people like you who love to tease them like toys and let them do their worst. #KeepYourDirtyHandsClean #Possible.”

Although the political feud between Lawless and Sorbo is very real, the actress recently spoke out about the potential implications of the election on the marriage of one of her famous characters. From 2012 to 2014, Lawless appeared as a guest star on NBC's Parks and Recreation As Diane Lewis, who eventually marries Ron Swanson, played by Nick Offerman. During a recent interview, Lawless shared what she thinks Diane and Ron might be up to now:

“I don’t know, I think it’s about encouraging voters to vote! That could be interesting because Ron is going to go on a crazy attack on liberals, and I wonder if he’s going to go on a… That could actually break them apart, in this election in America.”

The 2024 presidential election is off to a strange start: One of our favorite parties may disintegrate Parks and Recreation Couples and adult men forget that multiracial people exist.
