Madame Web star Emma Roberts has become accustomed to being targeted by internet trolls, and is fully expecting the same thing to happen when it comes to her new movie, Space Cadet. In a recent interview, Roberts explained how she believes the Sony Spider-Man Universe movie’s demise was brought about due to the internet’s need to make fun of everything.

Roberts appeared as Mary Parker in Madame Web, one of the several female leads alongside Dakota Johnson’s titular clairvoyant. While she did not suffer the biggest backlash, which was reserved for Johnson, the actress was still “bummed out” by the negativity the film was subjected to, thanks mainly to online trolling. Speaking to Variety, Roberts explained:

“If it wasn’t for internet culture and everything being made into a joke, I think that the reception would’ve been different. And that’s what bums me out about a lot of stuff, even stuff that I’ve done, is people just make such a joke out of everything now.”

She explained her own love of the movie, and how sometimes things just don’t land at the right time, while others that you don’t expect doing that well become huge hits. She said:

“Things do well, but then you watch them, and you’re like, “This did well?” There is no secret. It’s about doing something goodish and it hitting at the right time. Everything else is like a wish and a prayer. I’m not intimidated by failure, and I’m not intimidated by people having negative thoughts about something. I personally really loved Madame Web. I really enjoyed the movie. I thought everyone in it was great. The director, S.J. Clarkson, I think did an amazing job.”

Madame Web Flopped at the Box Office, but Came Back Strong on Netflix

Like many movies that have struggled in terms of box office performance or have gained mostly negative reviews, Madame Web’s theatrical run was redeemed slightly by its streaming performance when it landed on Netflix back in May.

Although the popularity of the movie on the streaming platform proved a big win for Netflix, and proved that an audience for the film was out there once it was put right under their noses, it’s arrival only led to even more negative reviews piling in on Rotten Tomatoes. Like many of Sony’s Spider-Man adjacent movies, audiences just have not gelled with the type of stories that are being told with the Marvel characters outside Marvel Studios’ MCU franchise.

Unfortunately, Madame Web continues to break unwanted records both critically and at the box office.

Sony will be hoping to redeem their past failings with the releases of Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter. Tom Hardy’s last time out as Venom will potentially prove to be one of the highest grossing movies of Sony’s franchise, if probably not a darling of critics. Having been delayed numerous times, it is still to be seen how much interest Kraven the Hunter can generate when it arrives in December, but based on past history, there is certainly going to be a big challenge ahead for Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s latest comic book movie in a crowded Christmas release schedule.

Madame Web
is currently available to stream on Netflix.
