“High Tide,” a drama about illegal immigrants in the United States, is scheduled to be released in North American theaters later this year.
The film was directed by Marco Calvani and premiered at the recent SXSW festival, and has been licensed to Strand Releasing by LD Entertainment.
The film follows an undocumented Brazilian immigrant who is grieving over the course of one summer in the United States. While searching for connection in the gay mecca of Provincetown, he meets an attractive man who seems to share his feelings of alienation and uncertainty in the country.
The film stars Brazilian actor Marco Pigosi (Gen V) and Emmy nominee James Bland (Giants). Supporting roles also feature Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny), Tony Award winner Bill Irwin (Rachel Getting Married), and Independent Spirit Award winner Maya Taylor (Tangerine).
The film is produced by Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilimon of LD Entertainment, along with Calvani. The rights deal was struck between John Gerrans of Strand Releasing and Michael Glassman of LD Entertainment.
“It’s an elegant and moving film that captures the current situation of undocumented immigrants trying to find a foothold here and the struggles they face,” said Marcus Ho of Strand Releasing.
A writer and director, Calvani was born in Italy and has a professional background in both theatre and film.
His first short film, The View from Here, starring Academy Award winner Melissa Leo and César Award winner Leïla Bekhti, was adapted from a play commissioned by The Actors Studio in 2016. Calvani's second short film, A Better Half, was named Best Short Film of 2022 by British film magazine Close-Up.
The strand currently includes versions of Fatih Akin's “Rhinegold,” Bradley Rost Gray's Sundance Award-winning “I'll Be Your Mirror,” and Ray Young's “All Shall Be Well.”
Led by Liddell and Shilimon, LD Entertainment is an independent studio that finances and produces high-quality, thoughtful films, television and theatrical productions. Its 40-plus film credits include Judy, Jackie, Pain Is Back, The Zookeeper's Wife and the Academy Award-nominated Beautiful. High Tide is its second major release of the year, following the recent release of The National Anthem.
