Matthew Macfadyen ‘Felt Miscast’ as Mr. Darcy in ‘Pride & Prejudice’

Before playing Tom Wambsgans on the HBO TV series “Succession,” Matthew Macfadyen was perhaps best known for his portrayal of Mr. Darcy in Joe Wright's 2005 film “Pride and Prejudice” alongside Keira Knightley.

Although he often tops fans' lists of their favorite interpretations of Jane Austen's sad romantic hero, Macfadyen revealed in a new interview on “CBS Mornings” that he “didn't really enjoy” playing the role.

“I'm sorry to say that,” McFadden said. “There were moments where I had a good time, but I wish I had enjoyed them more. I wish I had been less anxious about them.”

Macfadyen said his anxiety stemmed from his feeling that he was not right for the role.

“I felt like I wasn't doing the role right. I wasn't good enough, or maybe I wasn't good enough, you know,” he continued. “But it worked out.”

And now, when fans recognize him as Mr. Darcy, Macfadyen says, “It's probably the most flattering thing that's ever happened to me.”

“It's been a good 20 years, so I guess I can't age like this,” he laughed.

Macfadyen was on “CBS Mornings” to promote his latest film, the Marvel hit “Deadpool and Wolverine,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Macfadyen plays Mr. Paradox, the boss of Reynolds' antihero.

“It's a fun part, watching Ryan and Hugh Jackman work together on set was a great experience. I'm kind of a fan of them, they're so great,” he said.

Macfadyen added that Mr. Paradox has a similar vibe to Tom's character in “Succession,” “in a kind of goofy businessman way.”

Deadpool and Wolverine is set to hit theaters next Friday, produced by Marvel and Disney.
