Meghan Markle Has Not ‘Scraped the Surface’ on Her Suicidal Thoughts

In a CBS interview with Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, Markle said there is still a lot to discuss when she talks about her struggle with suicide to the media.

“When you go through any level of pain or trauma, I think part of the healing journey, and certainly part of my journey, is being able to be really open about it,” Markle said. “And I haven’t really been open about my experience, but I think I would never want someone else to feel that way, I would never want someone else to make plans like that, I would never want someone else to not believe that.”

Markle first spoke publicly about her suicidal thoughts in a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, admitting to the talk show host that she felt “ashamed” when she first discussed it with her husband and family.

“I was so ashamed to say it at the time, and I was ashamed to have to admit it to Harry, especially knowing how much he had lost. But I knew that if I didn’t say it, I would,” Markle said. “I didn’t want to be alive anymore.”

Three years on, Markle is more comfortable discussing her struggles. While the subject remains sensitive for the Duchess of Sussex, she hopes her words will help those struggling with suicidal thoughts and encourage them to seek help.

“If expressing what I’ve overcome is going to save someone, or encourage someone in their life to really check in with themselves, and not assume that looks are good and everything is fine, then that’s worth it,” Markle added. “I’ll take the hit for that.”
