Per Variety, a follow-up to the original Melrose Place series is in the works with original cast members, Heather Locklear, Laura Leighton, and Daphne Zuniga on board to return. The project is currently in development at CBS Studios and is in the process of being shopped to streamers and networks. The new series, written by Lauren Gussis, will pick up years after the original show and provide an update on some of its characters, and it appears that one of them may not be among the living anymore.

According to reports, the new series will begin as one of their closest friends dies suddenly and this causes the original Melrose Place gang to gather together to honor this person’s memory. However, in true Melrose fashion, the reunion will uncover old traumas, rekindle old romances, reignite old resentments, and reveal new and juicy secrets. This will throw the characters into the drama that audiences know and love but be told from a fresh and modern perspective. Locklear, Leighton, and Zuniga are attached to star as their original Melrose characters, Amanda Woodward, Sydney Andrews, and Jo Reynolds, respectively.

Melrose Place originally aired on Fox for seven seasons from 1992-1999 and a staggering 226 episodes. Created by Darren Star and produced by TV mega-producer Aaron Spelling, the show began as a spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210 and followed the lives of a group of young adults living in an apartment complex on Melrose Place, in West Hollywood, California. The series began moderately successful in the ratings but became a pop-cultural phenomenon when it went from being less about the trials and tribulations of angsty twenty-somethings and became a full-on primetime soap by its second season and this was aided by the addition of Locklear as Amanda Woodward to the cast.

It’s been nearly a decade since the cast of Melrose Place last got together and some are ready to reprise their roles.

Locklear began as a recurring player during the series’ first season and was upped to regular during Season 2 when ratings began to improve due largely to her presence, as she had been a staple on another Spelling primetime soap, Dynasty. The actress would go on to appear in all seven seasons of the show.

Zuniga was a series regular for the first four seasons of the show, while Leighton, during her five-season run, was a guest star, recurring, and a series regular. Other actors who appeared as a part of its sprawling ensemble cast include Josie Bissett, Doug Savant, Thomas Calabro, Grant Show, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Brooke Langton, Rob Estes, Andrew Shue, Lisa Rinna, Alyssa Milano, Kristin Davis, and Marcia Cross, among others. Other original cast members are expected to return for the new show should it be picked up.

This isn’t the first time Melrose Place has been resurrected since the end of the original series. Back in 2009, the CW revived the show and revolved it around a new group of 20-30-somethings living on Melrose Place. The series featured a new cast but also brought back Locklear, Leighton, and Zuniga to reprise their roles as a connective tissue to the original show. The series only lasted one season, and it’s said that this new take will not draw from the CW version which saw Leighton’s Sydney being murdered to kick off the show.
