Michael C. Hall to Return for Sequel Series

Dexter fans were in for a treat at Comic-Con for the prequel series Original Sin. Not only will original star Michael C. Hall narrate the prequel, he'll be returning to the screen in an all-new sequel series titled Dexter: Resurrection.

“We are thrilled to have the incredible Michael C. Hall return to his iconic role as Dexter Morgan on Showtime’s most successful series ever,” said Chris McCarthy, Co-CEO of Paramount Global, of the new series. “While ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ will be loved by tens of millions of fans, ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ will introduce a whole new generation of viewers to this iconic series by starting from the beginning, which is sure to please existing audiences as well.”

The original series “Dexter” ran on Showtime from 2006 to 2013, followed by “Dexter: New Blood” in 2021, which aired 10 years after the original finale. “Resurrection” will serve as a sequel to “New Blood,” set in the present day. It will premiere in the summer of 2025. Additionally, previous seasons of both shows are available to Paramount+ subscribers with the Paramount+ with Showtime plan.

The original show has been soaring up the Nielsen charts in the past two months; the week of June 24, it reached No. 2 in the top 10 (behind Showtime’s “Your Honor”), with 1.48 billion minutes watched across all platforms, beating out leading shows “The Bear,” “The Boys” and “Bridgerton.”

Hall appeared at a panel discussion titled “Dexter: Original Sin” in San Diego on Friday, joining executive producer and showrunner Clyde Phillips, executive producer Scott Reynolds and cast members Christian Slater, Patrick Gibson and Molly Brown. Guest star Sarah Michelle Gellar also served as moderator.

The 10-episode prequel series is set in 1991, 15 years before the events of “Dexter,” and follows the title character (Gibson) “as he transitions from student to vengeful serial killer.” It will premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime in December.

According to the official synopsis, “When his bloodthirsty desires can no longer be ignored, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. Guided by his father, Harry, he adopts a code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without ever being on law enforcement's radar. This is a special challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensic internship with the Miami Metro Police Department.”

Slater plays Dexter's father, Harry Morgan, and Brown plays his sister, Debra. Patrick Dempsey also stars in the series as Aaron Spencer, the Miami Metro Homicide police chief who has a long-term relationship with Harry. Gellar plays Dexter's boss at the station. New cast members include James Martinez, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, and Reno Wilson.
