‘Monster’ Season 3 to Star Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein

Charlie Hunnam will star in the third season of Netflix's Monster as notorious serial killer Ed Gein.

Ryan Murphy, co-creator of the series, made the announcement on stage during a promotional event in Los Angeles for the second season of “Monster,” which focuses on the Menendez brothers and the murder of their parents. The first season of the series focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Gein, who like Dahmer was from Wisconsin, gained notoriety in the 1950s when authorities discovered that he had not only murdered multiple people, but had also dug up graves from a cemetery near his home and fashioned all manner of household items and clothing from human remains. Gein's case later served as the inspiration for several major figures in popular culture, including Norman Bates in “Psycho” and Buffalo Bill in “The Silence of the Lambs.”

This marks Hunnam’s latest recently announced TV role. It was reported in May that he was set to star in Amazon’s upcoming series “Criminal.” He is best known for starring in the hit FX biker drama “Sons of Anarchy,” in which he played Jackson “Jax” Teller for seven seasons. He also recently starred in Apple’s adaptation of the book “Shantaram.” Hunnam’s other TV credits include “Undeclared” and “Queer as Folk,” while his film credits include “Pacific Rim,” “The Gentlemen,” “True History of the Kelly Gang,” “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” and “The Lost City of Z.”

He is repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, CAA, and Sloan Offer.

Monster premiered on Netflix in 2022. The first season received widespread acclaim, particularly for the performances of Evan Peters as Dahmer and Niecy Nash as Glenda Cleveland. Peters won a Golden Globe for the series, while Nash won an Emmy. The series is currently the third most-watched series in Netflix history.

Season 2 is set to premiere on September 21. The season stars Nicolás Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch as Lyle and Erik Menendez, while Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny play their parents. Murphy and Ian Brennan co-created and executive produced the series alongside Bardem, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, David McMillan, Louise Shore, and Carl Franklin. Episode directors include Brennan, Franklin, Max Winkler, Paris Barclay, and Michael Uppendahl, while writers include Murphy, Brennan, David McMillan, Todd Kubrak, and Riley Smith.
