Netflix Drops ‘Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’ Teaser on Anniversary

35 years exactly After the Menendez brothers shot their parents inside their Beverly Hills mansion, Netflix has released a trailer for Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennen's upcoming series about the murders.

Quick clip of Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik MenendezOn September 19, the brothers are shown pulling into a Beverly Hills driveway that August evening, entering their home seconds before their parents are shot. A gunshot is heard as the screen fades to black.

The Menendez brothers were convicted of the murders of Jose and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. They maintain to this day that their motives were motivated by lifelong physical, emotional and sexual abuse by their parents.

In 1993, the first trial became a national event after it was broadcast on Court TV, which lawyer and journalist Steven Brill had launched two years earlier. In 2017, Brill told Rolling Stone that the trial “probably had the effect, maybe good, maybe bad, of proving that even if you don’t have a celebrity, if the circumstances are dramatic enough, people will be drawn in. We’ve had a lot of trials like this since then, but this was the one that really proved that people will care about watching big trials.”
