New Grateful Dead Box Set Highlights 1978 Spring Tour

Grateful Dead fans can celebrate the band's landmark 1978 spring tour with Friend of the devilsa massive box set released on September 20th.

Friend of the Devils: April 1978 This album features eight shows the band played that month, including a show in Pembroke Pines, Florida on April 4 and the Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia on April 10 and 11. The shows were originally recorded by Betty Cantor Jackson and restored and mastered by engineer Jeffrey Norman. The deluxe edition includes 19 CDs and a book with cover notes by Steve Silverman and photographs by James Anderson, Bob Menken, and others.

“These eight shows tell the story of a band that was engaged, inspired and focused on giving their best every night,” Dead archivist David Lemieux said in a statement. “If ever there was a tour where the Dead gave every moment, it was this one.”

The shows are also significant because they included the song “Fire on the Mountain” before its release that fall, as well as the beginnings of their “Drums” and “Space” traditions.[It] “It started with Billy banging on his gear and using his elbow to change the pitch, making it sound like a talking drum,” Silberman writes in the cover notes. “Mickey, who was equally involved, was wearing a Jerry T-shirt. Then the road crew joined in. What’s this? Steve Parish playing a cowbell! Finally, the big man himself comes out, strokes his beard, sits down, maybe takes a breath or two, and picks up a pair of sticks. My God, Garcia plays steel drums—and he loves it!”

One of the band's performances – from Duke University's Cameron Indoor Stadium (on April 12, 1978) – would also be released separately as Duke '78Listen to “US Blues” from that night below.
