Nigerian Drama ‘Princess on a Hill’ Set at Showmax, Trailer Unveiled

African streaming company Showmax has announced the premiere date for its latest Nigerian original drama series, “Princess on a Hill,” in November 2024. The announcement came during the MIP Africa 2024 event in Cape Town, as part of the Fame Week Africa festival.

Produced by Abiola Sobo and Tolu Ajayi, “Princess on the Hill” explores themes of power and ambition in a corporate environment. Ajayi’s debut film, “Over the Bridge,” premiered at the New York African Film Festival and received 12 nominations at this year’s Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).

The series stars Onyinye Odokoro (Slum King) as Zara, a young woman who wins Lawson Group’s Leading Ladies reality show and finds herself tasked with saving the company. Bimbo Manuel (Breath of Life, AMVCA Best Movie Award 2024 winner) plays the aggressive CEO Moyosoor Lawson.

The cast also includes Eva Ewara, Ireti Doyle, Femi Jacobs, Andrew Bunting, Mimi Chaka, and Norbert Young. Chuka Egor and Shio Oki-Sobu serve as co-executive producers.

“We want to convey that dreamlike quality in this modern African version of a universal mythical experience,” Ajayi said. “Business meeting rooms as kingdoms, a wounded and cruel king, swaggering knights, scheming bishops, treacherous dukes, a beautiful village girl turned warrior princess, and sometimes a touch of the village jester—all the familiar elements of a mythical tale.”

“Through relatable African characters, the series reveals the decay of innocence and the deep desire for validation,” Sobo added.

MultiChoice’s Chief Content and Channels Officer for West Africa, Busola Tejumola, emphasized the high production values and stated that “Princess on a Hill” is in line with our mission to showcase authentic Nigerian stories and African creative talent.
