Based on the novel of the same name by Shannon Boval, On fast horses Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Lee (Will Poulter) are about to start a new life after Lee returns from the Korean War. His ultimate dream is to get married and start a new life in California, but Muriel doesn't seem too happy about that idea. To complicate matters further, Lee's brother, Julius (played by Jacob Elordi), shows up unexpectedly on their doorstep. Of course, he runs off just as quickly as he arrived, heading to Las Vegas to have some fun and make some quick money.
There, Julius gets a job at a casino and meets the attractive Henry (Diego Calva), and the two begin a passionate but secret romance. Meanwhile, after Muriel agrees to move to California with Lee, she becomes inactive as they struggle to make ends meet. Although they make progress and secure a new home for themselves, it is not enough to satisfy her. Thus She ends up gambling on racehorses, and keeps her winnings a secret from her husband.The four characters each strive to fulfill their own dreams, discovering new truths, for better and worse, about themselves in the process.

If there’s any consolation to Minahan’s film, it’s Luc Montpellier’s cinematography. Capturing the sunny California skies and the heat of Las Vegas, his work brings out the eroticism inherent in each location. What’s more, it makes us feel as though the film is set in a golden age of American history, finding rays of light in moments of uncertainty.
