It also helps that the plot takes off immediately, with tragedy hitting the ground running and serving as a catalyst for a biologically aging but professionally promising writer named Simon (Fabian) to take to the stage and participate in a series of professional debates hosted by a prestigious company called Rampart. His debate partner, George (Ricco Di Stefano), has a heart attack, and rather than cancel the performances, Simon insists on going ahead with a last-minute replacement.

And here's where the action begins. Simon's side is his wife, the distinguished doctor Claire (a wonderful Diana Kokonobos), who is suffering from stage four cancer. But Claire is the real power player between her and Simon – and as they go backstage for the debate, a femme fatale-type character named Sarah (Kylie Rhodes, KnockoutShe's blonde and pretty, and may or may not have ulterior motives when she asks Simon and Claire for autographs – she was there when word got out that Simon needed a last-minute replacement for the debate.
But Claire isn’t a sexy woman in the seductive sense of crime-mystery movies. She’s a staunch believer in God, and that becomes the central topic of three discussions moderated by Simon’s intellectual colleagues, Annette (Ayanna Berkshire) and Terrence (Lowell Dew), who struggle to keep the peace as Simon repeatedly tries to discredit Claire’s claims that God has a place in our world.

Out with the new, in with the old?
the way we talk It becomes much more than just two intellectuals trading eloquent insults back and forth. Don’t worry, this isn’t just an extended Aaron Sorkin scene, gentlemen. Simon is showing his strange fascination with the younger, more attractive Sarah in ways that might upset you. He’s not helped by his drinking problem, which perhaps explains why he’s introduced in the first debate as an “emerging” writer, despite his obvious middle-aged status. Why did it take him so long in his life to find his calling?
In this vein, Ebright's story takes on a unique dynamic here, contradicting generalizations that older generations may be more likely to adhere to religion than younger ones. the way we talkSimon is older than Sarah but less well known in the public eye, and he’s the one who’s fixated on the fact that “there is no God.” One look at someone like Sarah and your stereotypical mind might think she’s more secular, and probably has fewer awards than the older Simon. But no offense to you, Fabian—you’re still as handsome and charming as ever, as evidenced by the AMC series Best Saul on Call.

Spying behind the mask of a mentally ill man
Plus, Simon just acts like a child at times: the way his ego gets the better of him, the way his narcissistic drives override his concern for his ailing wife Claire, the way he lashes out at Sarah and probably says some unforgivable things to her, on stage in front of everyone, in the heat of the moment. He's a weird main character for sure, and at times, he's hard to watch, but that's the point. – And the more mature themes in the work, such as Simon's severe social anxiety that he tries so hard to hide, help keep the final result feeling more rational.
The eerie soundtrack helps with this effect, as do the fleeting dream sequences where Simon glimpses his late companion George. George would have been there to guide Simon through his moment to shine while his wife looks on, trying to be proud of him (though George would have been a more grounded character). Instead, Simon believes he has all the tools he needs and becomes a bit of a tragic hero by the end. Don’t we all? Anyway, Fabian delivers a groundbreaking turn that can't be missed. For a guy we usually see as a guest star on all those great TV shows (Morning Show, Magnum P.I.etc.) that I have seen over the years.
