PlayStation Reveals PS5 Pro Price, Launch Date

PlayStation has officially confirmed the release of its next console, the PS5 Pro.

The console will launch on November 7 for $699.99 compared to its predecessor, the PS5, which launched in November 2020 for $499 with a digital-only version for $399. Pre-orders begin September 26.

PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny revealed the updated console during a PlayStation livestreamed tech demo on Tuesday, noting that its specs compared to the PS5 include a larger GPU, advanced ray tracing, and AI-powered upscaling.

According to PlayStation's description of the PS5 Pro:

  • Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we're upgrading to a GPU It has 67% more compute units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this allows for 45% faster gameplay rendering, making for a smoother experience.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added more powerful ray tracing that delivers more dynamic light reflection and refraction. This allows for ray tracing that’s twice, and sometimes three times, faster than the current PS5 console.
  • AI-based upscaling: We also introduce PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-based upscaling that uses machine learning technology to deliver superior image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.

PlayStation says many games will receive free software updates and will carry the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label. Enhanced titles include “Alan Wake 2,” “Assassin's Creed: Shadows,” “Demon's Souls,” “Dragon's Dogma 2,” “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth,” “Gran Turismo 7,” “Hogwarts Legacy,” “Horizon Forbidden West,” “Marvel's Spider-Man 2,” “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart,” “The Crew Motorfest,” “The First Descendant,” “The Last of Us Part II Remastered,” and more.

The PS5 Pro comes with a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and a pre-installed copy of Astro's Playroom. The console is available as a disc-free console, with the option to purchase the PS5 disc drive separately.
