Rachel Ziegler Fends Off Killer Computers in A24’s ‘Y2K’ Trailer

Not all machines Come in peace. In the trailer for the movie Y2K, man-made devices turn into killing machines when the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve 1999.

“The year 2000 is real,” a partygoer shouts in the trailer, as hairspray turns into a flamethrower, videotapes shoot out like rockets, and a Tamagotchi decapitates someone, leaving a group of teenagers fighting for their lives. “Goodbye, goodbye, human race.”

A24 2000 The film revolves around the Y2K bug, or computer glitch, that caused panic in the lead-up to the year 2000. The apocalyptic comedy follows friends Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison), who crash a New Year's Eve party in hopes of getting close to Laura (Rachel Zegler), Eli's high school crush. But after a power outage, the high school students must fend off an army of ancient machines.

Millions of people were bracing for a massive internet blackout on New Year’s Eve, spending billions of dollars to prevent what they thought was inevitable. When computer programs were written in the 1960s, they thought of years as two-digit numbers. So, with 00 being replaced by 99, many feared that data would behave as if it were the year 19000 instead of 2000.

2000 The film imagines a world where the worst has already happened. “We’re talking about a computer apocalypse,” says one person in the trailer.
