Rebecca Ferguson and Steve Zahn Talk What to Expect in ‘Silo’ Season 2

For Rebecca Ferguson, star and executive producer of Apple TV+'s “Silo,” the multi-layered mysteries that lurk beneath the surface of the sci-fi drama remind her of the rules of cricket, England's national sport, which can sometimes be confusing.

“Every time you think you’ve solved something, whether it’s an emotional puzzle or a connection or a bond, there’s another hurdle and another hurdle,” Ferguson said. “And that’s the great thing about these stories, they never end. And when you think you’ve got the story, it’s like a game of cricket, you still haven’t got it. It just evaporates. Did that make sense? Like cricket, like a game, it doesn’t make sense.”

Ferguson sat down with her co-stars Steve Zahn and Common, as well as executive producer and showrunner Graham Yost and executive producer and “Silo” book series author Hugh Howey at Variety Studio, presented by Google TV, at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 to discuss the upcoming second season of “Silo.”

Silo is set in a post-apocalyptic future where humans are forced to live in massive underground bunkers known as silos to protect themselves from toxic waste polluting the surface world.

For Zane, a newcomer to the show, joining Silo was “a very unique job.” Although he had to catch up with the very complex world that executive producer Yost created in the first season, he only interacted with one character in the second season, Juliet Nichols, played by Ferguson, due to the solitary nature of his character.

“It’s a huge world, there’s a lot of people involved, there’s a lot of movement in and out of characters, this and that,” Zahn said. “But my character has been living alone for decades, so I’m really acting with one person here.”

“It’s weird,” Ferguson interjected about Xan’s character. “It’s creepy and weird.”

Season 2 also features a rebellion within the confines of Silo 18, which Common's security chief, Robert Sims, will have to deal with. Although the role was difficult for him, Common welcomed the challenge and was excited to explore all the questions and fears pent up inside Sims' mind.

“Sims is facing a lot of things that may not fully come out yet in Season 2, but there are definitely some questions, at least in the way she handled the rebellion this season,” Common said. “It’s something about being part of the government.” [in ‘Silo’] “For me as a person, it's like being part of the people who created the community and continue to spread lies, or maybe some of them are true. It's funny for me to play that character, but I love it.”
