The religious drama “The Gospel of Judas,” directed by Italy's Giulio Pace and starring Rupert Everett, Paz Vega, John Savage and Abel Ferrara, has achieved its first advance sales with distributor Plus Films KFT acquiring the rights to the film in Latin America.
The film, which is now in post-production, recently wrapped filming in Italy's scenic southern Calabria region and is being sold by Italian company Minerva Pictures on the sidelines of the Toronto Film Festival.
Pace is a prolific actor and director, with numerous directorial credits in film and television, including The Anarchist Banker, which was released from the Official Selection of the Venice Film Festival in 2019. He is also the Artistic Director of the Turin Film Festival.
The Gospel of Judas takes an innovative approach to retelling the story of Judas Iscariot, who famously betrayed Jesus Christ by revealing his whereabouts in exchange for thirty pieces of silver. In the film, Judas, who was on the verge of death, reflects on his life and his relationship with Jesus Christ and the disciples.
On the same day, two men die hanging a few steps from each other: Jesus on the cross, and Judas on a tree, according to the synopsis provided. “They are mirror images: one needs the other to fulfill his destiny,” it adds.
The Gospel of Judas is produced by Bess's wife Tiziana Rocca, who heads the production company Agnus D. Minerva Pictures and Agriciona Banda are also among the producers, in collaboration with Rai Cinema.
“We are very pleased that Plus Films KFT has chosen to work on this film,” Minerva’s head of international sales said in a statement, noting that the plan is to release “The Gospel of Judas” in cinemas across Latin America.
