The song will appear on Remi Wolf’s forthcoming sophomore studio album Big Ideas, out July 12
Remi Wolf is feeling the funk — both musically and emotionally — in the music video for her latest single “Cinderella,” an offering from her forthcoming sophomore studio album Big Ideas, out July 12.
“‘Cinderella’ is a lyrical collage of the ups and downs and mood swings and transient lifestyle I was experiencing while writing this album,” Wolf shared in a statement. “Constant travel and rapid changes led me to feel such a rollercoaster of emotion- moving from feeling really insecure to feeling really good to feeling manic and depressed and then feeling OK again, while desperately craving a grounding figure to tell me I was doing a good job.”
With Los Angeles as her backdrop, Wolf slips into a groove alongside a crew of colorful backup dancers and a horn-driven band ensemble in the video, co-directed by herself and Ragan Henderson. Her leg warmers change color from moment to moment, reflecting her own emotional malleability. Mac Demarco makes a special appearance in the clip, handing out ice cream cones from a cart of frozen treats — but his familiar face isn’t her saving grace.
“This song was me stepping in as my own fairy godmother telling myself that I was in control,” Wolf continued. “Sonically, I wanted the song to have a sense of 70s nostalgia while still feeling like a record made today. And I wanted to make something where you can’t help but dance and move and feel good while listening. I recorded this at Electric Lady in New York at the beginning of 2023. I initially made the song with just myself and Solomonophonic – and then I was able to bring in some amazing horns players to round out the sauce.”
Big Ideas marks Wolf’s first full-length album release since 2021’s Juno, which she expanded with a deluxe edition the following year. In the meantime, the musician has been on the road and collecting stories and fairytales to shape into her latest record. In the coming weeks, she’ll be joining Olivia Rodrigo as a special guest on the Guts world tour.
