The second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” suffered a significant drop in viewership in its second week on Luminate's weekly original streaming chart.
Last week, the Amazon Prime Video series managed to secure second place with 764.7 million minutes watched in the first full week of its first three episodes available, along with the first day of episode four. But during the September 6-12 viewing window — which included the first full week of episode 4 and the first day of episode 5 — it only managed 372.7 million minutes watched, taking fourth place. While there was less new content to watch than the previous week, when the first three episodes had just dropped, it still doesn’t bode well for a major IP to drop more than 50% after a single week, when word-of-mouth appeal is still high. It’s worth noting that Luminate only measures viewership in the US, and Amazon confirmed earlier this week that a lot of the show’s fans are watching from other regions — though the studio didn’t provide data to back up that claim.
The headline of the week was “The Perfect Couple,” which was a huge hit in its first week of availability, racking up 3.4 billion minutes watched. The Netflix series is the first to surpass 3 billion minutes on the Luminate chart since the release of the second season of “Bridgerton” in June.
In second place was “The Secret Life of Mormon Wives,” which debuted with 781.1 million minutes watched in its first week on Hulu. It was followed by another unscripted series, “Selling Sunset,” which debuted with 586.7 million minutes watched.
Following “Rings of Power” were “Outlast” season 2 (317 million), “Worst Ex Ever” (310.7 million) and “Kaos” (307.9 million), while the final three titles on the list — “The Accident,” “Bad Monkey” and “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist” — each came in at less than 300 million minutes watched.
On the movie chart, “Rebel Ridge” topped the list with 1.5 billion minutes watched in its first week on Netflix. “The Deliverance,” which took the top spot last week, followed with 309.8 million minutes, while “The Union” took third place in its fourth week on Netflix with 149 million minutes watched.
The rest of the charts went to titles with less than a million minutes of viewing: Apollo 12: Survival, Killer, The Helper 2 (a rare Tubi appearance on the charts), Jackpot!, Incoming, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, and The Instigators.
