Romulus’ Bursts Onto U.K., Ireland Box Office Charts


Disney's “Alien: Romulus” topped the UK and Ireland box office on its opening weekend, taking £3.7 million ($4.8 million), according to figures from Comscore.

The sci-fi horror film beat Sony's It Ends With Us, which dropped to second place with £2.8m in its second weekend, taking its total to £11.3m. Disney's Deadpool & Wolverine came in third, adding £2.3m in its fourth week for a total of £48.4m.

Trafalgar Releasing's 15th anniversary re-release of “Coraline” took fourth place with £1.2m. Universal's “Despicable Me 4” continued its good form in its sixth week, taking £1.1m for a total of £38.7m in fifth place.

Other films in the top ten include Warner Bros.' Trap in sixth place (£558,233 weekend, £2.5m total), Disney's Inside Out 2 in seventh place (£506,524 weekend, £55.5m total), Warner Bros.' Twisters in eighth place (£315,162 weekend, £12.9m total) and Bakrania Media's Indian horror comedy Stree 2 in ninth place with £291,804 total. Lionsgate UK's Borderlands took £181,065 in its second weekend, for a total of £1.4m.

Looking ahead, next week sees Zoe Kravitz’s thriller “Blink Twice,” starring Channing Tatum, set to open in more than 300 locations, Miracle/Dazzler’s animated “Noah’s Ark” hits theaters, and Sony’s comedy “Between the Temples,” starring Jason Schwartzman, Carol Kane and Dolly De Leon, opens.

Entertainment Film Distributors is opening a modern reimagining of the 1994 cult classic “The Crow,” while Universal is premiering the Berlin-premiered horror thriller “Cuckoo,” starring Hunter Schafer. ICA Cinema is screening the political documentary “Clandestina,” and from Vertigo comes the family drama “Widow Clicquot.”

Nostalgia fans can catch Sony's “The Amazing Spider-Man” in a 2024 re-release for one week only, as well as Paramount's “Pulp Fiction” in a 30th anniversary 4K re-release.

The independent film scene is equally busy, with planned releases for Dogwoof's documentary “The Mountain Within Me,” Curzon's Oscar-nominated Irish film “Kneecap,” and Bulldog Film Distribution's drama “Cadejo Blanco.”

From India, Dreamz Entertainment is re-releasing megastar Chiranjeevi's 2002 hit song 'Indra' on his birthday on August 22, while the company is also releasing the Telugu comedy 'Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam'.

Additionally, Trafalgar Releasing will open the K-pop concert film “Seventeen’s ‘Follow’ Tour Back to Theaters” on Wednesday.
