Sabrina Carpenter Performs ‘Please Please Please’ in Medley for VMAs

Sabrina Carpenter performed a bold medley of her chart-topping songs — “Please Please Please,” “Taste” and “Espresso,” or Nos. 3, 4 and 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively — at the 2024 MTV VMAs on Tuesday.

Cyndi Lauper introduced Carpenter, praising the singer as a “brilliant songwriter,” and ended her speech by urging the audience to “prepare to hear the whole place say 'son of a bitch!'” Carpenter then made her VMAs stage debut — fittingly starting with “Please Please Please” atop a silver, sequin-covered swing that hovered above the stage.

After delivering that famous line, Carpenter took the stage to continue performing “Taste,” and even reenacted a scene from the song's music video with Jenna Ortega where she kisses her — but Ortega was replaced by an alien.

Carpenter has earned the first of seven nominations for this year's MTV VMAs, and is up for Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit song “Espresso.” Her other nominations are for Best Pop Song, Best Direction for “Please, Please, Please” and Best Editing for “Espresso.”

Shortly after attending the MTV Video Music Awards, Carpenter will embark on her “Short n’ Sweet” tour, which kicks off on September 23 in Columbus, Ohio. The tour will visit 33 arenas in the US including Madison Square Garden in New York and Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles before heading to the UK in 2025.

Recently diverse In an interview, Carpenter described Short n' Sweet as the “hot big sister” to her fifth studio album, Emails I Can't Send, adding, “It's my second 'big' album; it's a companion but not the same thing. When it comes to taking full creative control and becoming a full-fledged adult, I consider this a second album.”

In June, Carpenter made history on the Hot 100 when his singles “Please, Please, Please” and “Espresso” debuted at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. It was the first time in Billboard's 66-year history that a solo act had two songs simultaneously on the Hot 100.
