A documentary about pioneering rock band the Sonics is finally set to be released widely next month, more than five years after its release. leap It broke into the film festival circuit.
The quintet formed in Tacoma, Washington in the early 1960s, after artists like Kurt Cobain and LCD Soundsystem (who immortalized the Sonics in the song “Losing My Edge”) gave them a new name, and released a pair of classic albums before splitting up for the first time in 1968.
However, these two albums – 1965 Here is Sonics And 1966 leap —was one of the founding members of the proto-punk movement led by bands like the Stooges and the MC5. Later, the Sonics were influenced by grunge bands from their native Pacific Northwest, including Mark Arm of Mudhoney, Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, all of whom were interviewed for leap.
After making its film festival debut in 2018, Boom: A Movie About the Sonics Finally, nationwide distribution was secured last year, with Forge screening the documentary in dozens of theaters beginning September 13. leap The album also features interviews with Nancy Wilson of Heart, Sub Pop producer Jack Endino, as well as all five core members of the Sonics: singer Jerry Rosley, saxophonist Rob Lind, brothers Larry and Andy Bariba (guitar and bass respectively) and drummer Bobby Bennett.
“The Sonics are more than just a band to me.” leap“This was my first obsession,” said the film’s writer and director Jordan Albertson in a statement. “The rock music was harder and faster than anything I’d ever heard. And it was from the ’60s! The music was dangerous, exciting and very powerful. It was punk rock before punk rock.”
