  • The new film may or may not be part of the “Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy.”

Director Edgar Wright’s “Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy” may be adding a new flavor. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, writer and actor Simon Pegg has revealed he and Wright are developing a fourth film together. Pegg was speaking with THR’s Lily Ford about his recent role in Prime Video’s hit series The Boys, as well as the 20th anniversary of Shaun of the Dead, the romantic zombie comedy that marked his first film collaboration with Wright.

It’s been more than a decade since Pegg and Wright, the director of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, worked on a film together, 2013’s The World’s End. Both have been occupied with projects in the years that followed, but the Star Trek actor says they have been kicking around ideas in the meantime. He says a future film collaboration is merely a matter of time.

It really is a question of when, not if.

Pegg and Wright first worked together on the 1996 British TV miniseries Asylum, and rose to fame with their British TV series Spaced. That series also starred Nick Frost, who would eventually join them in their future collaborations, with Wright directing and Pegg co-writing. Shaun of the Dead was the breakthrough film for all three, with their success only allowing time for the trio to work together twice more. Pegg says he and Wright hope to change that soon.

There’s something always in the works with Edgar and I. Since Shaun of the Dead, our lives have changed dramatically. We’re both busy into the distant future. The biggest challenge that we have right now is finding a moment to get together and spend six, seven weeks, to get our first draft out and come up with the idea. But we’re constantly looking for that. Edgar came over to my house last year and stayed for the week, and we just sort of talked about films and what we want to do next. We just need the time to do it.

Following the success of Shaun of the Dead, Wright directed a number of critically acclaimed films, including Baby Driver and Last Night in Soho. He also wrote Ant-Man and The Adventures of Tintin. Pegg would go on to star in the Mission Impossible and Star Trek films, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Ready Player One. Frost has since appeared in Paul and Attack the Block.

The Cornetto Trilogy was Hugely Successful

Shaun of the Dead marked the first of three films Edgar Wright would direct with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The other films are 2007’s Hot Fuzz and 2013’s The World’s End. While the films are considered a trilogy by fans, none of the stories are related, and the only connection is through the films incorporating the same actors and director. Pegg and Frost are the leads in the films, but no fewer than eight actors appear in some role in all three films, including Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) and Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean).

The films earned the unofficial nickname “The Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy” because each film features a different-colored wrapper of a Cornetto ice cream cone, an Italian ice cream brand sold in Britain. The color coincides with the theme of the film: Shaun of the Dead featured a strawberry flavored ice cream and a red wrapper, representing the blood spilled by the zombies. Hot Fuzz featured a vanilla cone with a blue wrapper, to represent the police characters in the film. The World’s End featured peppermint ice cream in a green wrapper, representing the aliens in the sci-fi flick.
