Stevie Wonder graced the stage of the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday with a heartfelt speech and performance in support of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Speaking to thousands gathered at the United Center in Chicago, Wonder declared: “I love you. Every song I've ever sung, every song I've ever written, was because of my love for you here.”

“But this year, I prayed so hard for peace to come to the nations of our world, but also to each of our hearts, even though our hearts have been beaten and broken beyond prayer,” he continued. “Now is the time to understand where we are and what it will take to win. Winning the broken hearts, winning the discouraged, winning the angry spirits — now is the time,” Wonder urged.

The music icon urged the crowd to “choose courage over complacency” and “continue to fight until we truly become one united people in the United States,” before moving on to his performance that night.

“Are you ready to reach for higher ground?” he said before launching into his 1973 hit “Higher Ground.” Backed by dancers dressed in white, Wonder sang, “People keep learning/Soldiers keep fighting/The world keeps turning/‘Cause it won’t take long.”
