Bollywood star Taapsee Pannu and writer-producer Kanika Dhillon team up once again for the Netflix original action thriller 'Gandhari'.
The film will be directed by acclaimed director Devashish Makhija, whose last film 'Goram' screened at several festivals including Rotterdam, Sydney, Busan, Durban and Mumbai.
“Gandhari promises a gripping story of dogged determination and extreme personal risk, set against the backdrop of gripping mystery and intense action. Audiences will see Taapsee Pannu as a fierce mother on a mission,” reads the plot description from Netflix.
This marks the second collaboration between Netflix and Dhillon's Kathha Pictures after 'Do Patti'.
Gandhari also marks the sixth instance of Pannu and Dhillon’s fruitful partnership, which began with Anurag Kashyap’s Toronto Award-winning Manmarziyaan (2018); Netflix Original Haseen Dillruba (2021) and its sequel Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba (2024); ZEE5 Global’s Rashmi Rocket (2021); and Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki (2023), starring Shah Rukh Khan.
“Gandhari is a gripping emotional story with heightened personal stakes. This unique action thriller is a testament to our commitment to delivering unique and highly engaging stories. We are excited to reunite with the dynamic duo, Kanika Dhillon and Taapsee Pannu, after the massive success of Phir Aaye Hussain Dilruba. Audiences have loved their work and we can’t wait for them to experience the intriguing depth of this new story,” said Ruchika Kapoor Sheikh, Director of Original Films, Netflix India.
“There is a special kind of magic that happens when Kanika and I come together to work on a film. With Gandhari, we venture into new emotional depths, and I am excited to explore this intense character. I have played a spy for nine years, and I was waiting for a script that would take me back to that and challenge me in new ways. After playing a spy, I was looking for something deeper, and Gandhari, with its powerful story of a mother driven by revenge, felt like the perfect fit. Collaborating with Netflix and Katha Pictures allows us to craft bold, unique and impactful stories. Working with Netflix has always been rewarding, as it enables us to reach a wider audience who share our passion for filmmaking,” said Bano.
“After the immense love for our film ‘Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba’, embarking on ‘Gandhari’ with Taapsee is like a creative homecoming. The film delves into the essence of a mother’s unwavering love and brutality. Don’t mess with a tigress’s cub, she will destroy you! Taapsee and I are coming together for a raw, fiery thriller for the first time! We are excited to deliver this powerful story of revenge and redemption! Netflix has given us the freedom to push creative boundaries and deliver this story in its truest form. I am so excited for our audience to experience this thrilling, action-packed and emotional saga – ‘Gandhari’!” said Dhillon.
