In the past two years, shows based on the Gotham Police Department and Arkham Asylum have been announced and then dropped, and now Reeves has shed more light on why those projects never made it to production.
Despite the great success it has achieved the BatmanAfter giving us a disturbing detective story in the Dark Knight’s history on screen, director Reeves has had a tough time expanding his universe to the small screen. Colin Farrell will reprise his role as the Penguin in his own series, but according to Reeves, his other shows were canceled because HBO executives wanted to focus more on “the main Batman characters” than the director had planned. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said:
While we were writing [

]“I said to myself, ‘Hey, you know what? I think there are some great shows we can make.’ That’s why I wanted to do a deal with Warner Bros. They said, ‘We love what you’re doing, and we want to focus more on the big characters.’”
Previously, Reeves described the Gotham PD series as not being about Batman, but instead focusing on a corrupt cop in Gotham City. As he explained at the time, “The movie was supposed to be about the worst gang in Gotham, the Gotham City Police Department. [the cop] He would have found himself at a dead end, and he would have met Gordon, to whom he would have been compared. But it would have been a battle for [the cop’s] spirit.”
Batman's Gotham PD series has been merged with the Penguin series.
While it seems that The Penguin The series has always had a specific story to tell, and Reeves revealed that there were aspects of his abandoned shows that made their way into its narrative. Share more about how The Penguin This series was created, Reeves explained:
“The interesting thing is that the story in the movie seems to revolve around the person that the Riddler is looking for, who he refers to, which is the Penguin, who is a kind of informant. This movie creates a power vacuum, and because the Penguin is not appreciated enough, people don't realize who he really is.”

It's not yet clear how much Reeves will be willing to share, but with the series on the horizon, we're likely to see more of Colin Farrell's Gotham criminal very soon.
