Pat Matter is the former leader of the Hells Angels who served 17 years in prison for his crimes and club affiliation. Matter recently sat down with Insider to look back at various motorcycle gang scenes from movies and TV to assess their realism. A scene was shown on Mater where, in response to Benny (Austin Butler) being attacked in a bar, Tommy (Tom Hardy) orders his gang to burn down the bar. While the scene may seem like it might be overly dramatic compared to reality, Matter rated it a 10/10 for realism.“In 1994, we had a potential chapter that was being sponsored by the Minnesota Hells Angels, the Hells Henchmen, and they had a club in Chicago,” he said. “Well, of course, the Outlaws are from there and they didn’t like that another club wanted to join the Hells Angels. So a bomb was placed in a car right outside the club, and I think it was the third largest bomb in history on U.S. soil.” Matter added:
“One of my members from Minnesota was there, and I was worried about him… I remember this vividly. So I called him to see if he was okay, and he was okay. No one was hurt in this, but it was very important.

The Bikeriders movie is based on a true story.
Jeff Nichols' slow-burn exploration of masculinity, brotherhood, and outlaw culture is based on the best-selling photography book by Danny Leon. Leon photographed the real Outlaws Motorcycle Club (the Hells Angels' main rival) throughout the 1960s, exploring the kind of people who joined the gang and how its power and influence spiraled out of control. All of the characters in Nichols' film are based on people Leon photographed and interviewed.
