The Boys Showrunner on That Butcher Moment Which Changed the Last Episode

Eric Kripkethe executive producer responsible for the superhero show on Prime Video, BoysBelieves Karl Urban He gave an Emmy-worthy performance as Billy Butcher in the season four finale. Kripke shared some behind-the-scenes details on a particular scene that was changed due to Urban’s painfully stilted dialogue delivery. Originally, the scene in question was designed to cut back and forth between Butcher and Hugh (Jack Quaid), but once the cameras rolled and Kripke, who directed the episode, saw the compelling performance happening in front of him, he knew the focus had to stay on Urban the entire time.

In the fourth season of BoysThe Butcher suffers from the effects of consuming large amounts of Temp V in Season 3. Diagnosed with a brain tumor as a result of his superhero transformation, The Butcher's time is coming to an end, and while he still delivers plenty of hilarious comments, insults, and fights in the final season, his battle with the poison coursing through his system comes to the forefront in Season 4.

The tumor has progressed to the point that Butcher finds himself hallucinating not only his dead wife Becca, but also FBI agent Joe Kessler, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. While the two ghosts pull Butcher in separate directions, Urban’s acting skills throughout the episode are off the charts, as Kripke pointed out in his X/Twitter post.

In the season finale, Butcher is recovering in the hospital after suffering a seizure that rendered him unconscious in the previous episode. In the scene Kripke referenced, Hughie and Butcher discuss how the latter fought his illness rather than abandon the boys and their plans. When Hughie asks for help, Butcher tells a story from when he and his brother were children:

“When I was a kid, I heard about this place in Nevada. A steak house where birds would come out when you served them a ribeye steak. Lenny almost peed himself when I told him. He thought it was the funniest thing he’d ever heard. We were going to go there someday. Well… it’s weird what you think about when the time comes, isn’t it?”

Kripke took to his X account to praise Urban's performance in the scene, which he calls: “A first-rate, Emmy-winning work.” Through some screenshots from the hospital butcher scene, Kripke shares his original idea for the scene and how Urban's performance made him change his plans:

How Season 4 Set Up The Boys' End

The final episode of the fourth season, which was originally titled “Assassination of the Runner“, then renamed”End of season 4After the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, the ending was not a happy one. Butcher finally got his act together and returned to the group just as Victoria Newman was making a deal with the Boys. In true Butcher fashion, he refused Hughie's pleas not to do anything rash, and killed her with his superpowers. Butcher then left with the deadly Sop virus, and as Homelander moved one step closer to taking over the White House, the Boys attempted to flee the country.

However, they didn’t get far, as one by one they were ambushed by Vogt’s best men – or maybe that was for the worst. While all hope is not lost, as Starlight finally manages to rediscover her powers and escape, the rest of the Boys are in a big pickle heading into Season 5. With only one season left of The Boys , the stakes have never been higher, but it looks like fans will have to wait two years to see how things play out in the final round.
